What nicotine does in the brain
When you inhale nicotine, it travels rapidly to the brain and triggers the release of dopamine, a chemical linked to reward and pleasure. That brief hit of reward teaches the brain to repeat the behaviour. With each use, the association between vaping and relief becomes stronger.
Over time, the brain adapts. It comes to expect regular nicotine and begins to feel uncomfortable without it. This is the shift from casual use to dependence: you are no longer vaping for a pleasant lift, but to avoid feeling bad.
Why vaping can be especially "sticky"
Several features of modern vaping products make them particularly good at creating and sustaining addiction:
- High, smooth nicotine delivery. Nicotine-salt formulations reduce the harshness of high concentrations, so users can take in far more nicotine than a traditional cigarette without the same throat discomfort.
- Always available and discreet. Vapes produce little lingering smell and can be used almost anywhere, encouraging frequent, all-day "topping up" rather than discrete sessions.
- Appealing flavours. Sweet and fruity flavours make the experience more pleasant and easier to repeat.
Unlike a pack of cigarettes that runs out, a vape offers a near-constant supply — which can mean near-constant nicotine exposure throughout the day.
The developing brain is more vulnerable
The human brain continues developing into the mid-twenties. During this period it is especially sensitive to nicotine. Exposure in adolescence can influence attention, memory, learning and mood, and can make the brain more prone to addiction — not only to nicotine, but potentially to other substances later in life.
This is a major reason public-health bodies are so concerned about youth vaping: a habit that starts at 14 or 15 can shape brain chemistry during a critical window of development.
Signs include vaping first thing in the morning, feeling anxious or irritable without it, using more than you intended, and repeatedly trying and failing to cut down. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone — and help is available.

When someone stops, withdrawal symptoms usually peak within the first few days and ease over the following weeks. Understanding that these feelings are temporary — and a sign the body is recovering — can make them easier to ride out.
